Pimpri-Chinchwad’s Population to Surpass Pune by 2054, Water Crisis Looms: Ajit Pawar
Pimpri Chinchwad, 7th February 2025: The population of Pimpri-Chinchwad is projected to exceed Pune’s by 2054, raising concerns over water availability, according to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Citing a report from a committee of officials, Pawar emphasized the need for long-term planning to address the city’s increasing demand for drinking water.
“Currently, Pimpri-Chinchwad gets water from Bhama Askhed, Andhra, and Pawana dams. But in the future, additional sources, including Tata dams, will have to be tapped to meet the demand,” he said. He also warned that, if necessary, seawater desalination—similar to Dubai’s approach—may have to be considered to ensure a steady water supply.
Pawar stressed that drinking water would remain the top priority, followed by supply to agriculture and industries. He also addressed traffic congestion, stating that public transport services must improve for long-term solutions. He assured that work on the proposed circular road will commence soon.
During his speech, Pawar highlighted his long-standing role in the city’s development. “Pimpri-Chinchwadkars know who has transformed this city. I dedicated 25 years to developing this region,” he said.
Taking a dig at BJP MLA Mahesh Landge, Pawar remarked, “I am fair in giving credit where it is due. Learn to acknowledge the good work done by others. Don’t be so stingy with praise.”
He also mentioned that Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the Police Commissionerate in 2018, and the new Commissionerate building is now under construction.
On the subject of new administrative divisions, Pawar clarified that no new districts will be created at this time, stating that the government would make a decision only when necessary.
This statement comes amid rapid urbanization and infrastructural expansion in Pimpri-Chinchwad, positioning it as one of Maharashtra’s fastest-growing urban centres.
