Pune Police to Survey and Regulate Loudspeakers at Places of Worship
Pune, 13th March 2025: In compliance with the Supreme Court of India’s directives to control noise pollution from loudspeakers at religious sites, the Pune Police have initiated a survey to identify authorized and unauthorized loudspeakers across the city. Pune City Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar has instructed all police stations to gather information on loudspeakers at various places of worship.
Currently, there are 1,830 loudspeakers recorded at different religious sites in Pune, including temples, churches, Buddhist viharas, mosques, dargahs, and madrasas.
The Maharashtra Government has mandated that noise levels must not exceed 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night. Violators will face action, and loudspeakers are to be switched off between 10 PM and 6 AM. This move aims to ensure adherence to noise pollution norms and maintain public peace.
The initiative follows a broader national effort to enforce noise pollution rules, with courts emphasizing that loudspeaker use is not essential to any religion and must comply with legal limits. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also warned of strict action against non-compliance, emphasizing the role of local police inspectors in enforcing these regulations.
