Nationwide UPI Outage Disrupts Digital Transactions
Pune, 26th March 2025: A major outage in the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system has caused significant disruptions in digital payments across the country since 7 PM on Wednesday. According to Downdetector, over 23,000 users have reported issues, including payment failures, fund transfer problems, and login errors.
The outage has impacted services across multiple banks and digital payment platforms, including Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, Airtel Money, HDFC Bank, and Axis Bank.
According to data from Downdetector, approximately 82% of users are facing difficulties in making payments, while 14% are struggling with fund transfers, and 5% are unable to access their apps.
In India, payment systems such as RTGS and NEFT are managed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), whereas IMPS, RuPay, and UPI fall under the purview of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Since January 1, 2020, the government has implemented a zero-charge framework for UPI transactions, making digital payments more accessible and cost-free for users.
UPI enables users to transfer money seamlessly through a Virtual Payment Address (VPA) linked to their bank accounts. This eliminates the need to remember bank account numbers, IFSC codes, or bank names. Users can send money using a mobile number, UPI ID, or Aadhaar number, making transactions faster and more convenient. Additionally, UPI allows for bill payments, online shopping, and merchant transactions with just a few taps on a smartphone.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the cause of the outage or an estimated timeline for resolution.
