Pune: Lohgaon Hits 42.7°C; Koregaon Park, Pashan, Chinchwad Also Scorch
Pune, 9th April 2025: The city continued to reel under intense heat on Tuesday as temperatures soared to 42.7°C at Lohgaon, setting a new record for the season and surpassing Monday’s peak of 42.4°C. The scorching conditions marked the second consecutive day of extreme weather, with no immediate relief in sight.
Shivajinagar also registered its highest temperature of the season, crossing the 41°C threshold for the first time. Several other neighbourhoods reported temperatures above 40°C, including Koregaon Park (41.4°C), Pashan (40.6°C), Chinchwad (40.3°C), Magarpatta (39.6°C), NDA (39.5°C), and Lavale (39.4°C), according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune.
“The current weather pattern is expected to persist until Thursday,” said S.D. Sanap, a meteorologist at IMD-Pune. “However, a shift in wind direction starting Friday could bring some moisture from southern India, possibly lowering the maximum temperatures slightly.”
Clear skies and dry conditions have contributed significantly to both the high daytime temperatures and unusually warm nights, experts said. Despite the spike, a formal heatwave warning has not been issued for Pune since the temperature deviation has not crossed the required 4.5°C above normal for two straight days.
“Though a heatwave alert hasn’t been declared yet, the high minimum temperatures are concerning,” said another IMD official. “Warm nights can be especially dangerous for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, and may affect sleep quality for the general population.”
Elsewhere in Maharashtra, similar conditions prevailed, with most cities in Marathwada and Vidarbha experiencing extreme heat. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar recorded 41.6°C, while Akola was the hottest spot in the state at a blistering 44.1°C.
Meteorologists urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
