Pune: Front Facade of Vishrambaug Wada to Open for Public by End of July
Pune, 30th June 2025: The iconic and historically significant Vishrambaug Wada in Pune is set to open its front facade to the public by the end of July, according to Chief Engineer of the Pune Municipal Corporation, Yuvraj Deshmukh.
The restoration of Vishrambaug Wada, which had seen delays over the past two years, was expedited following consistent follow-ups by Creative Foundation President Sandeep Khardekar.
History of Vishrambaug Wada:
Vishrambaug Wada, a landmark in Pune’s heritage, was purchased in 1750 by Bajirao Peshwa II and reconstructed in grand style in 1810. In 1820, a Veda school was established on the premises, followed by the Deccan College. In 1880, the eastern section of the wada was damaged by fire. Between 1930 and 1960, the Pune Municipal Corporation relocated its offices here.
Around 1990, major conservation work was carried out to preserve the wada. However, for the last two years, its front facade has been undergoing further restoration under the Heritage Cell of the PMC. Noting delays, Khardekar had warned of an agitation if progress was not made, prompting Chief Engineer Deshmukh to direct Deputy Engineer Sunil Mohite to personally inspect the site.
Speaking on the project, Mohite explained, “The front facade had suffered severe damage due to sun, wind, and rain. Restoring the intricate wooden arches and delicate craftsmanship was challenging, but we have succeeded. The front facade will be fully opened to citizens by the end of July.”
At present, chambers one and two of the Wada are already open to visitors. The complex also houses a PMC Transport Pass Centre and a post office.
Khardekar further urged that, “The PMC should take full responsibility for operating and maintaining this invaluable heritage structure or hand it over to a dedicated institution, ensuring citizens can access and appreciate this precious legacy.”
