Pune, 13th July 2025: In a heartwarming act of courage and compassion, RPF Women Head Constable Shilpa Ukade assisted in delivering a baby girl at Pune Railway Station late Thursday night, earning widespread appreciation for her swift response and presence of mind.

The incident occurred around 10 PM on Platform Number 1, when 29-year-old Rajawati Kol, who was travelling with her husband, sister, and daughter, suddenly went into labour while waiting to board a train to her native village. The news of her condition was quickly passed on by alert railway staff to Head Constable Ukade, who was on night duty in the CCTV control room at the time.

“I didn’t know what to do, but I had to help,” says Ukade

Recalling the moment, Ukade said, “I got a message that a woman was experiencing severe labour pain at Platform 1. I rushed to the spot immediately. We had already informed the doctors, but they said it would take them some time to arrive.”

Faced with a critical situation, Ukade didn’t hesitate. She, along with the help of a female sanitation worker, quickly moved Rajawati to a sheltered area near the parcel section of the station. Within minutes, the woman delivered a premature baby girl, in her seventh month of pregnancy.

“I was scared and unsure, but I knew I had to act fast. I’m also a woman, and helping another woman in need gave me immense satisfaction,” Ukade added emotionally.

Medical Team Arrives, Baby Now Stable

Shortly after the delivery, the medical team reached the scene and rushed the mother and newborn to the hospital. Doctors noted that the baby was initially in a fragile condition due to the premature birth, but has since stabilized and is now reported to be doing well.

Praise for Quick Thinking and Compassion

Ukade’s prompt action and calm demeanour under pressure have been widely praised by railway officials and passengers alike. Her efforts are being hailed as a shining example of duty, humanity, and women’s strength.

In an environment known for its hustle and bustle, Pune Railway Station witnessed a moment of pure humanity — a reminder that behind the uniforms are individuals ready to go above and beyond the call of duty.
