Pune: Tenant Information Must Be Submitted to Police; Pune Rural Authorities Issue Mandatory Order
Pune, 18th July 2025: In a move aimed at strengthening law enforcement and crime prevention, the Pune Rural Administration has made it mandatory for homeowners to submit detailed information about their tenants to the local police station. The order, issued by Additional District Magistrate Jyoti Kadam, will remain in effect for the next two months.
As per the directive, homeowners in Pune’s rural areas must provide the following documents and information when renting out their premises:
-Full name of the tenant
-Current and permanent address
-Two recent passport-size photographs
-Name and address of a known reference
-Rental agreement copy
-Valid identity proof of the tenant
The decision comes in light of the growing industrial presence in Pune’s rural belt, which has led to a surge in migration and tenancy. Authorities emphasize that having a database of tenants is essential for rapid investigation in the event of criminal or terrorist activity.
“In many cases, the lack of tenant verification delays investigation. This order is a preventive measure to ensure public safety and aid in faster resolution of crimes,” stated a senior police officer.
The order clearly states that failure to submit tenant information will result in legal action against the landlord under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). This section pertains to violations of lawful public orders and can lead to penalties or prosecution.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to tighten security and improve traceability of individuals living in rental accommodations, especially in areas with high worker mobility. Police officials have urged all homeowners to cooperate fully and ensure compliance within the stipulated time frame.
