Pune, 24th July 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Konkan and the ghat regions of Madhya Maharashtra, including sections of Pune district, beginning Thursday and continuing into Friday.

According to the IMD, several areas in Konkan, Goa, and the Western Ghats may experience intense rainfall till July 29, with isolated spots likely to record extremely heavy showers. Pune city, however, is expected to receive light rain in the next one to two days, followed by moderate spells thereafter.

Ghat Regions on Orange Alert
The ghat sections of Pune district remain under an orange alert till July 27, prompting local authorities to advise caution for tourists, trekkers, and residents living in landslide-prone zones.

“Due to the development of a new low-pressure area over the northern Bay of Bengal, the monsoon current is gaining momentum again,” said S.D. Sanap, a scientist with the IMD.

“As a result, we anticipate widespread rainfall over Konkan and Goa, along with the ghat belts of Madhya Maharashtra. Some locations could receive exceptionally heavy downpours,” he added.

Sanap further noted, “Pune city is likely to witness light rain over the next couple of days. After that, light to moderate rain is expected for four to five days.”

Dam Storage Levels Show Significant Improvement
Data from the Irrigation Department on Thursday morning (July 24) showed an encouraging rise in water levels across the four major reservoirs supplying Pune:

Temghar saw 22 mm, holding 2.80 TMC (75.57%)
Khadakwasla got 4 mm, at 1.05 TMC (53.12%)
Combined, these dams now hold 23.60 TMC of water, amounting to nearly 81% of their total capacity—significantly higher than the 17.82 TMC (61.12%) recorded on the same day last year.
