Pune, 24th July 2025: In a welcome move for thousands of rural families, the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti has removed the mandatory requirement to upload a caste certificate while filling out the online application for the upcoming Class 6 entrance examination. The decision comes after numerous parents raised concerns about difficulties in procuring the certificate in time.

The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) are residential schools run by the Central Government, affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). These schools primarily cater to rural students, offering co-educational residential schooling from Class 6 to 12, completely free of cost.

The entrance exam for the academic year 2026–27 is scheduled to be held on December 13, 2025, and the last date to apply online is July 29. Initially, the online form required Other Backward Class (OBC) applicants to upload a valid caste certificate as a mandatory document. However, many rural parents lacked the document or faced delays in obtaining it, which hindered the application process.

B.R. Khedkar, Principal of JNV Pune, explained, “Several parents approached us, stating that they couldn’t apply due to the caste certificate requirement. The issue was escalated, and now the portal has been modified — the caste certificate upload condition has been removed. This change will allow more students, especially from rural areas, to apply without delay.”

There are over 600 JNVs across India, with the highest numbers in states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan. Maharashtra itself has more than 30 such schools, providing quality education to talented students from remote areas.

This latest step by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti is expected to boost participation and ease the application process for thousands of aspirants and their families across the country.
