Pune’s Adaptive Traffic System Cuts Congestion by 15%, Boosts Vehicle Speed by 10%: PMC
Pune, 10th August 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has reported a 15% reduction in traffic congestion and a 10% increase in average vehicle speed following upgrades to the city’s Adaptive Traffic Management System (ATMS) installed at 125 intersections (Chowk) under the Smart City project.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Prithviraj B.P. said that earlier complaints about the ATMS — introduced to streamline traffic flow — had raised questions about its cost-effectiveness. “With the help of the police department, we made necessary technical changes to the system, and the results are now visible,” he said.
The upgraded ATMS now better coordinates signal timings with real-time traffic density, allowing vehicles to pass through multiple intersections without frequent stops. According to PMC data, around 70% of vehicles at many junctions receive green signals immediately, reducing idling time, fuel consumption, and pollution.
Each ATMS-equipped intersection has cameras that record vehicle movement, enabling PMC to monitor system performance, track improvements, and study daily traffic patterns for further planning. The system, first deployed in 2022, can now adjust signal durations based on vehicle counts, offering a more dynamic response to peak-hour congestion.
Prithviraj noted that the enhanced ATMS now provides a full-road view rather than just intersection monitoring, and further refinements are being explored to maximise efficiency.
