Pune: Maharashtra Government Approves Bibwewadi and Balaji Nagar Stations on Swargate-Katraj Metro Route
Pune, 20th August 2025: The Maharashtra government has approved the inclusion of two new metro stations Bibwewadi and Balaji Nagar on the Pune Metro’s Purple Line extension between Swargate and Katraj. The decision was taken in a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, and senior officials in attendance.
Locations of the New Stations
Bibwewadi Station: To be constructed near the Anna Bhau Sathe Memorial.
Balaji Nagar Station: To be constructed opposite the main entrance of Bharati Vidyapeeth and Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park.
Revised Katraj Station: The terminal station will now be located under the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus stand at Katraj, slightly increasing the track distance.
Background and Demand
The Swargate-Katraj metro extension spans 5.463 km. Initially, three stations Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj were planned. However, with long gaps between these stations, citizens and public representatives had demanded the addition of more stations for better connectivity. The PMC standing committee and general body had recently approved the revised proposal.
Urban Development Minister Madhuri Misal had earlier, in January 2025, proposed the inclusion of Bibwewadi and Balaji Nagar stations on the extension.
Project Significance
The extended route, with five stations instead of the originally planned three, aims to improve accessibility across the corridor. Officials have stated that the new stations will cater to dense residential and institutional areas while addressing traffic congestion along the Swargate–Katraj stretch.
