Pune, 20th August 2025: Residents of Ektanagari on Sinhagad Road are being evacuated after heavy rains led to water entering housing societies once again. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) staff and fire brigade teams have been relocating families since last night, following a sharp rise in water discharge from the Khadakwasla dam.

The dam authorities increased water release from 35,000 cusecs on Tuesday night to 39,000 cusecs on Wednesday, prompting flood alerts in low-lying areas along the river basin. The Baba Bhide Bridge in Pune has also gone under water, further affecting traffic and connectivity.

Ektanagari Hit Again
Last year, Ektanagari had witnessed similar flooding during heavy monsoon showers, which led to severe hardship for residents. At that time, then Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had assured the construction of a protective wall to prevent future flooding. However, with the city witnessing continuous rains over the past two days, the area is once again waterlogged, forcing emergency evacuation.

Monsoon Situation in Pune
According to officials, a low-pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal has intensified monsoon activity, bringing heavy rainfall to the Konkan coast, Pune city, and the Ghats of Madhya Maharashtra. With water levels rising rapidly, PMC has appealed to citizens in flood-prone areas to remain cautious and cooperate with relocation efforts.

Further discharge from Khadakwasla dam will depend on rainfall in the catchment areas, officials added.
