Velhe, 20th August 2025: A video showing young students from Jorkarwadi village, situated at the foot of Fort Torna and Rajgad, risking their lives to reach school has gone viral on social media, drawing attention to the hardships faced by children in the region.

According to villager Ashok Sangle, four children walk nearly one to one-and-a-half kilometers every day to reach Metpilavare for their Anganwadi and Zilla Parishad School. During the monsoon, however, the route becomes treacherous due to heavy water flow from the mountains.

“When it rains heavily, the path is blocked, and the education of these students comes to a halt. At times, parents and children are forced to make dangerous crossings despite the risk,” he said.

Social activist Vishal Pilavare added that the rocky paths in the area have become slippery with moss, making it difficult for anyone to walk safely. “Rajgad taluka is considered a rain reservoir. During heavy rainfall, children either miss school or undertake extremely risky journeys. Despite repeated appeals over the years, the problem remains unresolved,” he said.

Parents too are distressed over the situation. Meenakshi Sangle, a resident, said, “For the past two days, heavy rains have forced parents to accompany children through dangerous streams. If anyone slips, they could easily be swept away. The administration must take immediate action to prevent a tragedy.”

Responding to the viral video, Velhe Tehsildar Niwas Dhane said the region is under a red alert due to continuous rains. “Students and parents should not risk their lives in such conditions. The administration will take immediate tempo
