Tradition vs. Security: Police Barricades Disrupt Pune Ganesh Festivities
Pune, 6th September 2025: The grand Ganesh immersion procession in Pune, which traditionally begins with garlanding the Lokmanya Tilak statue at Mahatma Phule Mandai and offering darshan of the Kasba Ganapati, saw an unusual turn this year as police barricades disrupted the participation of political leaders and municipal officials.
Former mayor Kamal Vyavare, Pune’s first woman mayor, along with former corporators and other political office bearers, were stopped outside the barricades by police in the name of security. The incident triggered anger and confusion among political activists, raising questions about why police intervention was deemed necessary in a program organized by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
Traditionally, the immersion procession starts from Mahatma Phule Mandai with participation from the mayor and corporators. However, over the past three and a half years, the Municipal Commissioner has overseen the procession in an administrative capacity.
Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar, Union Minister of State Muralidhar Mohol, Minister of Higher and Technical Education Chandrakant Patil, and Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal were present during the procession this year, alongside several former corporators and political office bearers.
Despite the presence of high-ranking officials, police barricades created confusion, as officers reportedly could not identify municipal personnel or political leaders. Several officials, including the Assistant Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, and municipal secretaries, were initially denied entry even after presenting their municipal identity cards. Entry was only allowed after senior officials intervened.
Journalists covering the event also faced obstacles. Police reportedly objected to the placement of the designated journalists’ room, claiming it was incorrectly positioned. The room had been set up so that the face of the Ganesh idol remained visible, but authorities maintained it blocked the view. As a result, many reporters had difficulty capturing photographs and videos, with some prevented from entering the area entirely until the procession concluded.
The incident has sparked criticism from political leaders, municipal officials, and media personnel, who have questioned the necessity and handling of the security measures. Observers say such disruptions risk creating unnecessary tension during what is meant to be a celebratory and devotional event.
