Pune: Encroachment Removal Drive in Chakan; PMRDA Warns of Legal Action for Repeat Offenders

Chakan, 13th September 2025: A joint anti-encroachment drive has been underway in Chakan for the past three days, carried out by the Municipal Council, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The action is focused on easing severe traffic congestion in the industrial hub.

Encroachments are being removed from the Pune–Nashik Highway, Chakan–Shikrapur Road, and Chakan–Talegaon Road, based on official government measurements. While some stretches have been cleared, several areas remain obstructed, leaving traffic snarls unresolved.

PMRDA Commissioner Yogesh Mhase cautioned that strict measures will follow if encroachments return after being cleared. “If anyone is found re-encroaching after removal, cases will be registered against them. Encroachments in the Chakan industrial estate must also be cleared,” Mhase said.

Residents and workers, however, have pointed out that internal roads within Chakan city remain choked with illegal structures, leading to daily traffic jams. They allege that certain builders have deliberately erected electric poles on road margins with the support of local power company officials, making removal difficult.

“The power company should not provide electricity to sheds or structures built illegally on roads. While some poles have been removed, many are still obstructing traffic. Directions will be issued to power company officials in the upcoming meeting to ensure they are cleared,” Mhase added.

Locals have also demanded that the Municipal Council carry out large-scale action across all internal roads of Chakan to address the persistent congestion.
