Pune: NIBM–Undri Residents Demand Crackdown on Alcohol-Related Nuisance and Crime
Hadapsar, 15th September 2025: Residents from housing societies along the NIBM–Undri Road, including Gagan Ela, Bramha Majestic, Natraj CHS, Runwal Daffodils, and other societies, have raised an alarm over the growing menace of public intoxication, illegal activities, and safety concerns linked to wine and beer shops in their locality.
The issue was formally presented during the Maha Janata Darbar in Hadapsar, where social activist Parveen Tambe, representing the NIBM–Undri Road Residents Forum, submitted a detailed memorandum to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, urging immediate government intervention.
Residents claim the area has become increasingly unsafe due to frequent incidents of public drinking, open urination, and verbal harassment — often targeting both men and women. These issues, they say, are especially troubling for families and children living nearby. “We feel unsafe even stepping out in our own neighborhood,” said a resident of Gagan Ela.
The problem is not limited to alcohol. According to several locals, the area has also seen a rise in drug peddling, putting the younger generation at risk of substance abuse and damaging the social environment. They emphasized the urgent need for strong police presence and proactive enforcement to prevent further deterioration.
Adding to residents’ fears, there have been multiple violent incidents involving intoxicated individuals allegedly carrying dangerous weapons such as knives, sickles, and even firearms. Many people reportedly consume alcohol inside parked cars along residential streets, creating an atmosphere of lawlessness and raising concerns about public health due to urination and littering.
Despite repeated complaints to the police, locals allege that no substantial action has been taken so far. Frustrated by the lack of response, the residents called for consistent patrolling, stricter monitoring of liquor outlets, and firm action against illegal activities.
In response to the growing concerns, State Excise Department officials visited the premises of Gagan Ela, Bramha Majestic, and Natraj CHS to assess the situation. Officials assured residents that notices would be issued to shop license holders found in violation of regulations and promised to coordinate with the police and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for enforcement measures.
While residents appreciated the visit and assurances, they stressed the need for visible and sustained action. They reiterated that only long-term, consistent enforcement could restore peace and safety to their neighborhoods.
