Pune, 1st October 2025: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to hand over 20 plots for parking of Metro commuters and staff vehicles, a move that comes after persistent follow-ups with the PMC Project Department, according to Dinkar Gojare, Chief Engineer of PMC’s Project Department.

Of these 20 plots, four will be designated specifically for parking near Yerwada and Ramwadi Metro stations, addressing concerns raised in Public Interest Litigation (PIL) No. 74 of 2024 filed by petitioners including Qaneez Sukhrani.

The PIL had highlighted the long-standing issue of illegal parking on footpaths and the unauthorized waiting of autos and cabs near Metro stations, which had increased due to the absence of proper parking facilities. While the implementation faced delays, petitioners expressed optimism that the initiative would finally fulfill the primary objective of the litigation.

The High Court had directed the Divisional Commissioner to propose a solution within two months. However, no significant progress was observed from the Commissioner’s office.

Following this, on December 5, 2024, petitioners organized a site visit with representatives from the Metro authorities, PMC, and the Traffic Police to assess parking challenges near Ramwadi and Yerwada stations. Minutes from the visit emphasized the urgent need for open land or reserved spaces within 50-100 meters of Metro stations to be surveyed for either acquisition or lease for commuter parking. The petitioners also stressed that these parking bays should not encroach on roads or footpaths and cautioned against private operators taking advantage of available spaces without PMC approval.

Officials have noted that lands reserved for public transport, such as PMPML near Yerwada, should be prioritized for acquisition, while privately owned land near Ramwadi could be leased to ensure controlled parking facilities.

The decision is expected to ease traffic congestion on Nagar Road and improve commuter convenience around key Metro stations.

Petitioner Qaneez Sukhrani said, “This move is a significant step toward resolving long-standing parking issues and ensuring Metro commuters have safe, designated spaces near stations.”
