Narhe, 1st October 2025: The accident-prone Navale Bridge on the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway once again witnessed a mishap on Wednesday, this time involving the car of Lavani dancer Gautami Patil. The vehicle collided with an autorickshaw near a hotel in Vadgaon, injuring three people. Fortunately, Patil was not in the car at the time of the accident.

The incident has once again put the spotlight on the growing number of accidents on the Navale Bridge stretch, particularly between Katraj Tunnel and Vadgaon Bridge. Residents and commuters have repeatedly questioned why accidents occur so frequently on this four-kilometer stretch.

Why Navale Bridge is a Danger Zone
Traffic experts and locals highlight multiple reasons:
Steep slope: Vehicles descending the bridge struggle to brake suddenly, leading to rear-end collisions.
Absence of service roads: Lack of service lanes forces all vehicles—from two-wheelers to heavy trucks—to share the main highway, worsening congestion and accident risks.

Heavy vehicle driving practices: Many truck drivers switch to neutral gear to save fuel, reducing their ability to brake in emergencies.
Poor infrastructure: Insufficient crash barriers, absence of notice boards, lack of pedestrian walkways, and no overbridges contribute to unsafe conditions.
24×7 heavy traffic: Goods traffic from southern states headed toward Mumbai uses this route, adding to the load.

What Can Be Done?
Experts suggest several urgent measures to reduce mishaps on Navale Bridge:
Reduce the steepness of the slope.
Construct proper service roads between Navale Bridge and Vadgaon Bridge.
Install safety barriers, signage, and pedestrian crossings.
Regulate heavy vehicle movement and prevent drivers from using neutral mode on slopes.
Enforce strict discipline among vehicle owners, discouraging them from halting on slopes.

Recurring Safety Concerns
Accidents on Navale Bridge have become a regular occurrence, raising concerns about road engineering, enforcement, and driver behavior. While civic bodies and highway authorities have proposed some safety measures, commuters say implementation remains inadequate.
