Kalyaninagar, 6th October 2025: A family’s lunch at a popular Irani café in Kalyaninagar turned into a distressing ordeal on Saturday when they discovered live worms inside a cheese toast.

Advocate Samuel Gode, a resident of Tingrenagar, was dining with his wife and two sons around 1 pm when the shocking incident occurred.

“We had already eaten half of the cheese toast and other snacks, including a chicken mayo sandwich, when my seven-year-old son complained that something was moving in his mouth,” Gode said. “When we opened the sandwich, we were horrified to see the cheese crawling with live worms.”

Gode said he immediately approached the café staff, only to be met with apparent indifference. “I informed the person at the counter about the worms, and he simply instructed the waiter to replace the item. There was no acknowledgment of the fact that my children and wife had already consumed the spoiled cheese. I was shocked and shared the video on Facebook to alert others,” he added.

The family experienced immediate health consequences after consuming the contaminated food. “Once we got home, my wife and sons vomited twice. My younger son, who is just one-and-a-half years old, developed a fever. We consulted a doctor who diagnosed mild food poisoning and prescribed medication. My toddler’s fever has not subsided yet, and hospitalization may be needed if his condition does not improve within 24 hours,” Gode told reporters on Sunday evening.

Café owner Amir Khourji described the incident as regrettable and said that spoiled stock was the cause. “We found two boxes of cheese with mould and worms in our inventory. Unfortunately, one box had been opened and served before we realized it. All contaminated stock has been removed, and we have reported the matter to our vendor. We source our cheese from a supplier associated with a major dairy company in India, and the issue is now being addressed at the distributor level,” he explained.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Pune has launched an investigation into the incident. Syed Imran Hashmi, Assistant Commissioner and designated officer, FDA Pune, said: “Upon receiving the video, we sent our food safety officer for a detailed inspection. She found quality issues with both the cheese and bread being used. We have collected samples, including 11 kg of cheese valued at Rs 6,325 and 6.3 kg of bread valued at Rs 900, for analysis and seizure. Legal action will be initiated against the food business operator based on the results.”

This incident has reignited public concern over hygiene and food safety at popular eateries in the city. In July, a shard of glass was reportedly found in a bun maska at Good Luck Café on FC Road. Gode’s case highlights the urgent need for stricter monitoring and quality control to ensure the safety of food served to customers.
