IRCTC Issues Clarification After Viral Video Alleges Reuse of Food Containers on Train 16601
Chennai, 19th October 2025: A viral social media post alleging that pantry car staff reused casserole containers onboard Train No. 16601 has prompted an official clarification from Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and its service provider, Express Food Services.
According to the clarification, an immediate inquiry was conducted after the video surfaced. The investigation revealed that a vendor had collected and cleaned unsold food packets, empty bottles, and packing cartons with the intention of selling them as scrap for minor monetary gain. IRCTC stated that the activity was carried out without the knowledge or approval of the pantry car manager or the management of Express Food Services.
The vendor reportedly told officials that scrap collectors, commonly referred to as “garbage vendors,” usually approach pantry staff at various stations, and he had gathered the discarded materials to hand them over to them.
IRCTC and Express Food Services emphasized that no used or unsold food was ever served to passengers and that all meals supplied onboard are freshly prepared at IRCTC-authorized base kitchens en route. These meals are produced following prescribed food safety and hygiene standards.
Express Food Services added that the incident was isolated and that immediate corrective measures have been taken to prevent any recurrence. The company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strict supervision and adherence to quality protocols.
