Pune: Maharashtra Govt Streamlines Rules to Fast-Track Metro and Public Transport Projects
Pune, 1st November 2025: To expedite public transport projects, the Maharashtra government has announced major policy decisions aimed at establishing unified control and regulation over transportation rules. The move seeks to enhance the Unified Development Control and Promotion Regulations (UDCPR) and accelerate projects such as metro railways, monorails, coastal roads, and elevated public transport systems. These projects will now receive priority status in city development plans (DP) to ensure faster implementation and avoid future delays.
Pune and Mumbai Metro Developments
In Pune, the state government’s unified control and regulatory framework will directly impact the metro, monorail, coastal road, and elevated public transport projects. These initiatives will be prioritized within the city’s development plans, eliminating prolonged approval procedures and administrative bottlenecks that have slowed progress in the past.
In Mumbai, the metropolitan development authority and the urban development department have already initiated steps to integrate elevated transport routes into their key development plans. For projects requiring permissions from other agencies, once approvals are secured, the relevant development plans will be automatically deemed amended.
Simplified Urban Planning Process
Under the new policy, if future amendments to city development plans are required, planning authorities and municipal bodies will no longer need to seek separate government approvals. This change will simplify and accelerate the decision-making process, supporting rapid urban growth and infrastructure expansion. The streamlined approval system is expected to benefit high-priority transport and urban development projects, ensuring faster execution and improved connectivity across Maharashtra.
