Pune Traders to Observe Full-Day Shutdown in Tribute to Ajit Pawar
Pune, 28th January 2026: A rare citywide commercial shutdown will be observed in Pune on Thursday (29 January) as the trading community keeps shutters down to mourn the sudden demise of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. The collective decision marks a significant tribute from one of the city’s most influential business bodies.
The Federation of Trade Associations of Pune (FTAP), popularly known as the Pune Vyapari Mahasangh, announced that traders across the city will close their establishments for the entire day on January 29 as a mark of respect. The federation described Pawar’s death as “accidental and tragic,” calling it a deeply painful and shocking loss for both the state and Pune’s business community.
In an official condolence message, the traders’ body remembered Pawar as a decisive, development-focused leader who consistently worked toward administrative efficiency. The federation credited him with playing a key role in infrastructure expansion, economic growth, and safeguarding the interests of traders in Pune city and district, noting that his contribution to the region’s development would be long remembered.
The organisation also conveyed heartfelt condolences to Pawar’s family, relatives, and supporters, offering prayers for strength during their time of grief. It stated that the one-day shutdown is intended as a collective tribute from Pune’s trading fraternity in honour of the late leader.
The appeal for the bandh was formally issued from the federation’s office in Sadashiv Peth through a joint statement by FTAP President Fatechand Ranka and Secretary Mahendra Pitaliya, urging traders across the city to observe the closure in solidarity and remembrance.
