Pune, 30th January 2026: Children working or begging at traffic signals have become a common sight across Pune, often missing out on education, healthcare, and a safe childhood. To address this growing concern, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced a city-wide project aimed at rehabilitating children involved in street work and begging.

The initiative, led by PMC’s Social Development Department, seeks to curb the exploitation of children and integrate them into mainstream education and social programs. Officials said the project’s primary focus is replacing street work with schooling and rehabilitation.

As part of the project, PMC will conduct surveys at major traffic signals, busy junctions, and crowded areas to identify affected children. Field visits will assess their family backgrounds, living conditions, and the factors that force them onto the streets. Special attention will be given to cases involving coercion, exploitation, or unsafe environments.

Education will be a key pillar of the initiative. In collaboration with social organisations, children will be registered and enrolled in schools according to their age and learning level. For those who have never attended school or dropped out, special learning programs will be organised with the help of non-governmental organisations.

Healthcare support will also be provided, including regular check-ups, medical treatment, vaccination, and nutritional assistance to improve overall well-being.

Additionally, children will be linked to PMC’s ‘Gharat’ shelter project for safe accommodation, counselling, and long-term rehabilitation.

Authorities emphasised that the project aims for sustainable solutions such as education and social reintegration rather than temporary relief.
The Social Development Department said the project will be rolled out in phases over the next one to one-and-a-half months.
