New Aadhaar App Enables Full Digital Identity Management from January 28
New Delhi, 30th January 2026: India’s digital identity ecosystem is poised for a significant upgrade as the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) launches the enhanced Aadhaar mobile application on January 28, enabling users to manage their identity details fully through their smartphones and reducing dependence on physical cards.
The updated app transforms Aadhaar into a comprehensive digital identity platform, allowing individuals to access, update, and present their Aadhaar information without needing paper copies for most routine verification processes.
Major Features Now Available
With the new rollout, several key functionalities have been enabled to improve user convenience and reduce visits to Aadhaar centres:
-Mobile Number Update: Users can now update their registered mobile numbers directly through the app — a task previously requiring an in-person visit.
-Address Update: The app allows users to request changes to their residential address by uploading valid supporting documents. Once verified, the revised address is updated in the Aadhaar database and reflected in the app.
To begin using these features, individuals must log in with the mobile number linked to their Aadhaar, securing access via OTP-based authentication. Guided in-app steps help users complete update requests from home.
Aadhaar as a Digital Identity Card-
The newly upgraded app also enables users to use their Aadhaar digitally as proof of identity at locations that accept the document, such as hotels, offices, airports, and event venues. This transition to digital verification helps minimise the risk of loss or misuse associated with carrying physical cards or photocopies.
Security and Future Enhancements-
UIDAI has underscored that the app balances security and convenience, with OTP-based access and controlled in-app processes. Users are encouraged to protect their devices with screen locks and safeguard OTPs to prevent unauthorized access.
The authority has also indicated plans to introduce additional features in future updates — potentially allowing users to update other personal details such as name and email ID directly through the app.
The launch marks a key milestone in India’s broader push toward digital and paperless governance. By enabling citizens to store, present, and update Aadhaar information digitally, the initiative aims to streamline public services, enhance data security, and reduce reliance on physical documentation.
With these enhancements, the Aadhaar app now evolves beyond a basic information viewer into a full-featured digital identity management platform, advancing India’s vision of accessible and secure digital services for all.
