Pune Faces Possible Water Cut as PMC Told to Clear Rs 932 Crore Dues
Pune, 17th February 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) may face an imminent disruption in water supply after the Water Resources Department directed it to clear pending dues of ₹932.88 crore within 15 days, warning that supply could be halted if the payment is not made.
Officials said Pune has an annual sanctioned allocation of 11.60 TMC of water. As of January 31, the civic body had already used 11.23 TMC, leaving a balance of only 0.36 TMC — estimated to last about 12 to 15 days at the current consumption rate.
In an official communication, the department stated that once the approved quota is exhausted, water cannot be drawn from the Khadakwasla Dam.
According to department data, PMC’s total outstanding dues had reached ₹952.62 crore. Although the civic body recently paid ₹19.75 crore toward charges for November and December, the remaining liability stands at ₹932.88 crore as of the end of February.
A senior official said the municipal corporation has been instructed to clear the arrears at the earliest, adding that supply could be stopped immediately if both the quota is exhausted and payments remain pending.
Figures shared by authorities indicate that during the 2024–25 financial year, PMC consumed 8.84 TMC more water than its sanctioned allocation.
Under provisions of the Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority, consumption exceeding 25 percent of the allotted quota attracts a penalty of 1.5 times the water rate, which increases to three times the rate if usage surpasses that threshold.
Officials noted that the civic body has exceeded its quota repeatedly since 2016 and penalties have been imposed in previous years as well.
