Baner, 28th February 2026: A 27-year-old newly married woman allegedly died by suicide after jumping from a residential building in Baner, barely three months after her wedding. The incident occurred on February 19 at a housing society in the area.

The deceased has been identified as Ganga Tejas Bembalkar (27). After her last rites were performed, her father lodged a complaint at the Baner Police Station.

Based on the complaint, police have registered a case against her husband, Tejas Shiva Bembalkar (31); her mother-in-law, Ujjwala Shiva Bembalkar (58); her father-in-law, Shiva Manikrao Bembalkar (62); and her sister-in-law, Riya Shiva Bembalkar (33). All the accused are residents of Peony Society, Yogi Park, Baner.

The complaint was filed by Prof. Sharan Kumar Mallikarjun Mashal (59), a resident of Kalaburagi in Karnataka. According to police, Ganga and Tejas were married on November 13 last year. Tejas works in an IT company, while Ganga was also well-educated.

As per the complaint, during marriage discussions, the Bembalkar family allegedly told Ganga’s father that the wedding would be conducted only if customary rituals were performed. After the engagement in June last year, the family allegedly began taunting and humiliating Ganga and demanded that she bring 21 tolas of gold ornaments from her parental home.

The complaint further states that Ganga had informed her father about the alleged dowry-related harassment. She met him on February 5 and reiterated that she was facing mental and physical harassment. Her father reportedly assured her that he would meet her again the following month.
However, on February 19, Ganga allegedly jumped from the residential building at Peony Society in Baner, resulting in her death.

Assistant Police Inspector Babasaheb Zarekar is conducting further investigation.
