Pune, 28th February 2026: With a rising number of patients travelling to Pune from across Maharashtra for medical treatment, the city is facing increasing pressure on its intensive care unit (ICU) facilities. To ensure timely access to ICU beds for critically ill patients, the state government will prepare a detailed 10-year roadmap to strengthen and expand ICU infrastructure, Minister of State for Public Health Meghna Deepak Bordikar-Sakore informed the Assembly.

She was responding to a calling attention motion raised by Sunil Kamble, MLA from the Pune Cantonment Assembly constituency.

Kamble pointed out that due to a shortage of ICU beds in major city hospitals, relatives of critically ill patients are often forced to move from one hospital to another in search of availability. He said Pune’s growing population, along with a steady influx of patients from other districts and parts of the state, has placed significant strain on the city’s healthcare infrastructure. He sought details on the measures being planned to address the issue.

Responding to the concern, Bordikar-Sakore said Pune has emerged as a major medical hub with advanced healthcare facilities, attracting patients from across Maharashtra. As per Indian Public Health Standards, one ICU bed is required for approximately every 2,800 patients.

She informed the House that Pune currently has around 2,400 ICU beds across government and private hospitals combined, which is higher than the prescribed benchmark. However, considering future requirements and the increasing healthcare burden, the government has initiated work on a comprehensive 10-year plan to further strengthen ICU services.

Under the proposed roadmap, the focus will be on setting up new ICU facilities, expanding the capacity of existing units, and reinforcing critical care systems to ensure timely and effective treatment for critically ill patients, the minister added.
