Pune Sees Protests and Mourning After Death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
Pune, 1st March 2026: Protests and mourning programmes were held across different parts of Pune on Sunday following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Members of the Shia Muslim community gathered in Kondhwa, Mominpura, and Camp to express their reactions to the developments in Iran.
In Kondhwa, protesters raised slogans against the United States, chanting “America Murdabad” to voice their opposition. The demonstration was held peacefully, with local police deployed in the area to maintain law and order. No untoward incidents were reported.
At Dalal Chowk in Mominpura, another protest was organised by members of the Shia Muslim community against air strikes carried out by the United States and Israel on Iran, which reportedly led to the death of Ayatollah Khamenei. The protest was led by Moulana Shabeeh Ahsan Kazmi.
Demonstrators gathered with placards and raised slogans expressing concern over the military action and its regional impact. Organisers said the rally was intended to convey their views in a peaceful and non-violent manner.

Meanwhile, a mourning programme was held at the Imambara in Camp, where people assembled to offer condolences and prayers. Ali Asgar Dekhani said the gathering was organised to mourn the death of Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei following the air strikes. Participants took part in traditional mourning rituals, prayers, and Qur’anic recitations. Verses from Surah Āl ʿImrān (3:169) were read during the programme, reflecting religious beliefs associated with sacrifice and martyrdom in Islam.
Those present recalled Ayatollah Khamenei’s long public life, including his religious scholarship, political role in Iran, and influence on regional and international affairs over several decades. The mourning gathering concluded peacefully with prayers and expressions of condolence.
Police officials said the situation across all locations remained under control throughout the day.
