Jorhat (Assam), 5th March 2026: An Indian Air Force (IAF) Sukhoi Su-30MKI multirole fighter aircraft has been declared overdue following its departure from the air base in Jorhat, Assam.

The aircraft lost contact with ground control at approximately 7:42 pm local time, prompting the immediate initiation of search and rescue operations.

According to initial reports from IAF sources, the twin-engine fighter took off on a routine mission earlier in the evening. It was last tracked and in communication at 7:42 pm, after which all radar and radio contact ceased.

The aircraft, a key asset in the IAF’s frontline fleet, typically carries a crew of two — a pilot and a weapons systems officer.

The IAF has launched a coordinated Search and Rescue (SAR) mission involving multiple assets, including helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, and ground teams, to locate the jet and ensure the safety of its crew.

Further details, including the exact nature of the sortie, flight path, and any possible distress signals, are being ascertained as investigations continue.

The Su-30MKI forms the backbone of the IAF’s combat strength, with over 260 units in service. The aircraft is known for its supermaneuverability, long-range strike capabilities, and integration of advanced indigenous and foreign systems.

IAF officials have urged the public to avoid speculation and have stated that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
