Saswad, 15th March 2026: The Saswad police have booked 100 to 150 persons for allegedly assaulting a group of 14 men from Kondhwa and Camp areas who had gone to a lake near Bopdev Ghat to break their Ramzan fast on Friday evening. Police said three suspects have been identified and efforts are underway to ascertain the identity of the remaining accused.

The incident occurred around 6.30 pm near Askarwadi in Purandar when Amin Shaikh (31), a resident of Kondhwa, along with 13 friends, had gathered near the lake for iftar.

In his complaint to the police, Shaikh alleged that a group of men who arrived on two-wheelers and four-wheelers approached them, questioned why they had come there. According to the complaint, the assailants, some of whom were carrying sticks and sharp weapons, objected to them wearing skullcaps and began assaulting them.

“As we tried to escape, some of them chased us, assaulted us and threatened to kill us while raising religious slogans,” Shaikh told the police. He also claimed that one of the accused was carrying a pistol and threatened to open a fire. Shaikh alleged that the attackers also took away their mobile phones and cash worth Rs 7,500.

Shaikh said he lost consciousness during the assault and the attackers fled, assuming he had died. Feroz Syyed, another victim who runs a cloth shop on MG Road in the Camp area, said several members of the group sustained injuries to the head, back and legs. “We managed to escape from the spot and later received treatment at a hospital in Kondhwa,” he said.

Kumar Kadam, inspector at Saswad police station, said an FIR has been registered and three suspects have been identified so far. “We are investigating the case and also verifying whether the accused are linked to any organisation,” he said.

The case has been registered under Sections 181(1), 190, 191(2), 191(3), 351(2) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant provisions of the Arms Act.
