Hinjawadi, 19th March 2026: A dispute over cab fare in Pune’s IT hub of Hinjawadi escalated into a violent incident after a driver allegedly bit a passenger’s fingers, leaving a 42-year-old software professional seriously injured.

According to police, the incident occurred on Monday afternoon near Phase I of the Hinjawadi IT Park. The victim had booked a ride through Rapido to travel to Nana Peth. However, an argument broke out even before the trip began when the driver refused to accept the fare shown on the app and instead demanded payment as per the meter.

The situation quickly turned into a physical altercation, during which the driver allegedly bit two fingers of the victim’s left hand, partially severing one of them. The injured man was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police took the accused into custody shortly after the incident. Assistant Police Inspector Sandeep Wanganekar said the victim approached the police the following day, after which a First Information Report (FIR) was registered at Hinjawadi Police Station.

The accused has been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to causing grievous hurt and intentional insult aimed at provoking a breach of peace. He has since been produced before a court.

Officials noted that such incidents involving app-based and local transport services have raised concerns over passenger safety, highlighting the need for stricter regulation and accountability.
