Pune: Canal Burst Triggers Flooding Near Magarpatta, Hundreds Stranded; Police Issue Diversions
Pune, March 23, 2026: A major canal breach near Shinde Vasti, close to the Magarpatta City township, led to severe waterlogging in the area on Monday, submerging several vehicles and inundating key roads, including the Magarpatta bypass.
According to officials, the canal carrying water from Khadakwasla dam towards Daund developed a leak and eventually breached, sending large volumes of water into nearby localities. The breach caused widespread flooding in Magarpatta City and surrounding areas, with several roads going completely underwater.
The waterlogging triggered heavy traffic congestion, with vehicles stranded on submerged stretches. Sources said the breach occurred in the early hours of Monday. Initially, it was suspected that a Pune Municipal Corporation pipeline had been damaged, but it was later confirmed to be a canal breach.
In response, the Khadakwasla irrigation department said water flow in the canal has been stopped. Authorities have also halted the release of water from the dam into the Mula-Mutha river as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, hundreds of IT professionals heading to offices in Magarpatta township faced difficulties, with many forced to wade through knee-deep water to reach their workplaces. Commuters on the Hadapsar-Kharadi road were stranded for hours due to severe congestion.

Himmat Jadhav, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Pune city, said waterlogging on the affected stretch is likely to persist for 10 to 12 hours and advised commuters to use alternative routes.
The Magarpatta–Mundhwa Road remained nearly paralysed due to water accumulation, while heavy congestion was reported at Mundhwa Chowk. Officials said the situation may continue for several hours as water is yet to recede.

Traffic management in Pune is already worst, then situations like this worsen it on a Monday after a long weekend when almost everyone tries to go to the office. Reached the office almost after an hour which is just 4 kms away.@PMCPune https://t.co/z2oeavhGJ0 pic.twitter.com/PCGGe4xb0B
