Pune, 2nd April 2026: Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds disrupted power supply across several parts of Pune city and its surrounding areas on Thursday afternoon, after multiple extra high voltage (EHV) and high-tension lines tripped, officials from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited said.

The sudden downpour, which lasted for more than an hour, led to widespread technical faults, including trees falling on power lines, feeder boxes getting submerged in water, and lightning strikes damaging infrastructure in several locations. Electricity staff were deployed on a war footing to restore supply, with power in many affected areas brought back through alternative arrangements.

In the Kothrud division : lightning strikes damaged the lightning arrestor system on the Kundanagari feeder, leading to disruption of power supply on that line. However, electricity was restored through an alternative route, and currently only two transformers remain non-functional. Additionally, power supply in parts of Kothrud was affected for about half an hour due to tripping on the Nanded City extra high voltage line, but normal supply resumed after the rain subsided.

In the Shivajinagar division : electricity supply was disrupted in areas including the university region, Khadki, Bavdhan, Baner and Shivaji Housing Society. Power has since been restored on the university feeder.

In Pimpri-Chinchwad’s Pimpri-Bhosari divisions : the Ravet 22 kV line was affected, resulting in 58 transformers going offline. Efforts are underway by power utility staff to restore supply through alternate arrangements.

In the Parvati division : a tree fall on a feeder from the old Parvati substation disrupted supply, and work is ongoing to remove it and restore electricity. Water accumulation in the incoming feeder boxes of the Prayag and Madhukosh lines also caused outages. Meanwhile, patrolling is being carried out on the Khadakwasla and Shravan lines, and faults will be repaired as soon as they are detected.

In the Bundgarden division: tree branches falling on the Vadachi wadi overhead line disrupted power supply in the area. However, electricity on the Wadia feeder was restored within an hour through an alternative route.

In the Rasta Peth division: power supply to areas such as Kondhwa and Yewalewadi was disrupted after an extra high voltage line supplying electricity to these localities was affected.

Officials said minor disruptions may also have occurred in low-tension lines across the city. Citizens have been urged to remain patient and report outages through helpline numbers or the official MSEDCL mobile app.
