Pune Police Introduce AI to Draft FIRs in Pilot Project at Baner Police Station
Baner, 7th April 2026: In a move aimed at modernising policing and improving operational efficiency, Pune Police have begun registering First Information Reports (FIRs) using Artificial Intelligence (AI) on a pilot basis at Baner Police Station.
According to Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, the system is designed to save time for both complainants and police personnel. By analysing the nature of a complaint, the AI platform can suggest relevant legal provisions and generate a draft FIR, helping reduce delays in the registration process.
The initiative seeks to simplify the otherwise complex process of drafting FIRs. A specially developed computer system automatically identifies and includes appropriate legal sections in the draft based on the details provided by the complainant. Police officers then review the draft and make any necessary corrections before formally registering the case.
The system also incorporates voice-to-text technology, allowing complainants to narrate their grievances, which are then converted into written form. Once the details are recorded, the AI system generates a draft FIR within a short time, enabling quicker processing of complaints.
After final verification by police officials, the FIR is registered and a crime number is generated immediately. The complainant is also notified about the registration without delay.
Officials believe the use of AI will help streamline police work, reduce paperwork, and make the complaint registration process faster and more citizen-friendly.
