Pune: Societies From Undri, Mohammadwadi and NIBM areas Brace for Water Shortage as Tanker Operators Announce Strike from Today
Pune, 15th April 2026: Water tanker operators have suspended supply in areas such as Undri, Mohammadwadi and NIBM, protesting against recent criticism. They have been facing criticism over rash driving, alleged traffic violations by drivers, particularly after two people lost their lives in tanker accidents earlier this month.
Tanker suppliers have announced that water supply in the areas will remain shut on April 15 and 16, a move likely to impact a large number of residents as most societies in these localities rely heavily on tanker water due to complete absence or shortage PMC supply.
Residents said tanker supply has already been disrupted since Tuesday evening. Asif Shaikh, a resident of Elina Living Housing Society in Mohammadwadi, said his society requires at least 30 tankers daily. “We have not received any tanker since last night. There is some water in storage tanks for now, but if supply is not restored, we are likely to face shortages by this evening as we depend largely on tankers,” he said.
Residents of another housing society in Undri said messages have been circulated within their society groups urging people to minimise water usage to manage the situation in case the disruption continues.
In one of the two fatal accidents reported earlier this month, the driver of the tanker involved was drunk. The PMC corporator had also caught another drunk driver on Sunday, which again sparked concerns over safety of commuters in the area as tanker movement is high.
The traffic police have started a drive against the tankers violating traffic norms and have penalized several vehicles over the last few days.
