Pune: Tourist from Mumbai Rescued After Falling Into Gorge at Torna Fort
Velhe, 19th April 2026: A 64-year-old tourist from Mumbai was rescued after he slipped and fell into a deep gorge while descending Torna Fort in Pune district, officials said on Sunday.
The incident occurred on Saturday night when Sanjay Vasant Neve (64), a resident of Dahisar in Mumbai, was trekking down the fort along with two companions after completing their visit. The group—Milind Suresh Joshi, Siddharth Madhav Lele, and Neve—had reached the fort via the Velhe route through the Binni Darwaza entrance.
While descending towards Bhatti village, Neve reportedly lost his footing and slipped, falling into a gorge approximately 200 feet deep. Realising the seriousness of the situation, his companions immediately alerted the police.
A rescue operation was swiftly launched with the help of local villagers and police personnel. Residents of Bhatti village, along with a team from Velhe Police Station, including Police Sub-Inspector Amit Deshmukh and other personnel, carried out the operation. Members of the Haveli taluka disaster management team also joined the effort.
Using ropes, the team managed to reach the injured tourist and safely pull him out of the gorge late at night after a challenging rescue operation.
Neve sustained a head injury and bleeding due to the fall. He was administered primary treatment at the rural hospital in Velhe and later discharged.
Authorities have urged trekkers to exercise caution while navigating steep and slippery routes, especially during evening hours.
