Vanaz–Chandni Chowk Pune Metro Extension Work Starts, Boost for Kothrud Connectivity
Kothrud, 23rd April 2026: Work has commenced on the proposed 1.5-km elevated Metro extension connecting Vanaz to Chandni Chowk, a project aimed at improving connectivity to the western edge of the city. The stretch, which received approval last year, will include two stations — Kothrud Depot and Chandni Chowk.
Officials from Maha Metro said the construction will be executed in a phased manner, with barricading planned in coordination with traffic authorities. Efforts are being made to minimise disruption and maintain sufficient road space for vehicles during the construction period.
The contract for building the viaduct and the two stations was awarded recently. In addition, a flyover is planned near the Kothrud Depot area and will be developed alongside the Metro corridor. Over the past few months, officials, along with representatives from the Pune Municipal Corporation, conducted site inspections to finalise station locations and entry and exit points.
Initial activities have begun in the Chandni Chowk area, including soil testing and surveys. According to an official, the existing viaduct near Vanaz depot has already been extended slightly, and further construction towards Chandni Chowk will begin from that point. Plans are also being finalised for a foot overbridge at Chandni Chowk to ensure safe pedestrian access from the highway, which will form an important component of the project.
Residents in the area have welcomed the move, citing long-standing connectivity issues. Bavdhan resident Samir Tambe said the lack of direct Metro access to Chandni Chowk has been inconvenient, often requiring additional travel to reach Vanaz station. Similarly, Kothrud resident Vinod Khaire said the extension should have been part of the original plan.
Regular commuters have urged authorities to expedite the project and complete the stretch at the earliest to ease travel in the western suburbs of Pune.
