Pune, 4th May 2026: Vivek Raghunath Wadekar, IRS (1991 Batch), has assumed charge as Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Pune — a position that befits the exceptional depth and range of a career built across some of the most consequential institutions of the Government of India.

Wadekar is no stranger to complexity. Over more than three decades in service, he has navigated the demanding intersections of taxation, financial enforcement, national security, and public policy with equal distinction. His postings have taken him far beyond the conventional boundaries of a revenue officer’s career, earning him a reputation as one of the department’s most accomplished and versatile officers.

In the realm of financial enforcement, he served as Special Director of Enforcement in the Enforcement Directorate, Delhi, and as Additional Director in the Financial Intelligence Unit–India (FIU-IND) — two of the country’s foremost agencies in the fight against economic crime and money laundering. He has also served as Additional/Joint Director in the Directorate of Vigilance of the Income Tax Department, upholding the standards of institutional integrity that the department demands of itself.

His contributions to central governance have been equally noteworthy. He served as Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs and as Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, before going on to hold the position of Director in the National Security Council Secretariat — an assignment that speaks to the confidence the Government placed in his counsel at the highest levels of strategic administration.

Prior to his current charge, Wadekar served as Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Pune, and before that as Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (TDS), Delhi, and Principal Commissioner of Income Tax (Central), Delhi — roles in which he oversaw matters of considerable legal and administrative weight.

A scholar as much as an administrator, Wadekar holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in History from the University of Delhi — where he studied at the distinguished St. Stephen’s College — and a Diploma in German Language from the University of Pune, reflecting an intellectual curiosity that extends well beyond the demands of public service.

As he assumes this senior-most charge in Pune, Wadekar brings not merely the authority of rank, but the wisdom of a career whose expansive ambit — spanning taxation, enforcement, national security, and public administration — has been defined, at every stage, by purpose, integrity, and service to the nation.
