Pune, 5th May 2026: A day after reports claimed that former DGP and retired IPS officer Meeran Borwankar had been appointed chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women, the state government on Monday termed the claims “baseless” and said no such development had taken place.

Clarifying the viral claims circulating on social media, officials said reports suggesting Borwankar’s appointment were incorrect and misleading.

“The news that went viral on social media with the headline “Meera Borvankar appointed as Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission” is false. She has not been appointed to the position of Chairperson of the Commission. All such news items are baseless” Directorate General of Information and Public Relations stated in an official statement on the X.

The clarification comes after posts and messages widely circulated online, creating confusion.

There had been a demand to appoint Borwankar as the chairperson of the commission, particularly after the Nasrapur rape and murder incident in which a three year old girl was raped and murdered by a 65-year-old Bhirao Kamble. NCP (SP) MLA while speaking to reporters after the incident urged the government to appoint an officer like Borwankar to lead the commission instead appointing a person linked to political party.

The post of chairperson of the state women commission has been vacant after NCP leader Rupali Chakankar resigned following controversy over her links to godman Ashok Kharat of Nashik.
