Pune Police Foil Escape Bid by Accused During Transit from Court

Hadapsar, 5th May 2026: A theft accused who attempted to escape from police custody in Hadapsar was nabbed by the police on Tuesday, officials said.
According to police, a case of wire theft has been registered at Hadapsar Police Station under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 303(2) and 3(5). The accused, identified as Abdul Tofiq Sheikh (32), a resident of Sadesatra Nali in Hadapsar, was arrested on May 4 at around 11:40 pm in connection with the case.
On May 5, Sheikh was produced before the court, which granted police custody remand till May 7 for further investigation. While he was being transported back to Hadapsar Police Station in a police van after the court hearing, the incident occurred.
Police said that the vehicle had halted at a traffic signal at Gandhi Chowk in Hadapsar. As the signal turned green and the vehicle began moving at a slow speed, the accused attempted to flee despite being handcuffed. However, alert police personnel acted immediately and managed to apprehend him on the spot, preventing his escape.
Following the incident, the accused was taken back into custody and has been lodged in the lock-up at Hadapsar Police Station under security.
Further investigation in the wire theft case is underway.
