Politics of Promises, Reality of Sewage: Drainage Chokes Again in Sayyed Nagar, Mohammadwadi; Residents Furious

Mohammadwadi, 31st May 2026: Residents of Sayyed Nagar area are once again facing severe civic problems as drainage lines in the locality have overflowed, causing sewage water to spread across roads and residential areas. Angry locals have blamed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and elected representatives for repeatedly ignoring the issue despite several complaints over the years.

According to residents, the drainage system frequently gets blocked due to garbage, leftover food materials, and oily wastewater allegedly being released into the lines by some unauthorized hotel businesses operating in the area. The overflowing drainage has created unhygienic conditions, with foul smell spreading across the locality and dirty water accumulating on roads.

Citizens fear that the worsening sanitation conditions could lead to serious health issues, especially with the monsoon season approaching. Children, women, and senior citizens are said to be the worst affected. Residents have also raised concerns over the increasing presence of mosquitoes, warning about the possible spread of dengue, malaria, and other infectious diseases.

Locals claim that this is not the first such incident. On May 10, 2026, a similar drainage blockage had created major inconvenience in the same area. Following complaints, officials from the Kondhwa-Yewalewadi Ward Office had visited the spot and assured residents that permanent measures would be taken. However, within days, the drainage system reportedly got blocked again, leading residents to question the effectiveness of the administration’s actions.

Residents allege that certain hotels in the area are repeatedly responsible for the drainage clogging, yet no strict action has been taken against them. This has led to allegations that unauthorized commercial establishments are being protected despite causing public inconvenience and health hazards.

Meanwhile, locals have expressed concern over the lack of proper drainage and nullah cleaning work before the onset of monsoon. They fear that if immediate action is not taken, the situation could worsen during heavy rainfall, leading to waterlogging, sewage entering homes, and an increased risk of disease outbreaks.

Citizens also accused local representatives of offering only assurances without taking concrete action. “Before elections, leaders make big promises about development, but when it comes to solving basic civic issues, nobody comes forward,” a resident said.

Residents of Sayyed Nagar have now demanded immediate inspection of the drainage system, permanent solutions to prevent repeated blockages, strict action against unauthorized businesses responsible for the issue, and completion of drainage and nullah cleaning work on a war footing before the monsoon begins.
