Pune Sikh Sangat Marks Shaheedi Diwas with Chhabil Seva on MG Road

Camp, 31st May 2026: In a heartfelt tribute to the martyrdom of the fifth Sikh Guru, members of the Pune Sikh Sangat organized a traditional Chhabil Seva on Pune’s busy MG Road on Sunday, distributing chilled rose milk to thousands of commuters and pedestrians amid the scorching summer heat.
The seva was conducted to commemorate the Shaheedi Diwas (Martyrdom Day) of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, who is revered in Sikh history as the first martyr of the Sikh faith and remembered as the “King of Martyrs” for his unwavering devotion and sacrifice.
Volunteers from the Pune Sikh Sangat gathered from early morning to prepare, chill, and distribute sweet rose milk as part of the long-standing Sikh tradition of serving humanity through Seva selfless service. The initiative drew participation from people across age groups, with volunteers working tirelessly throughout the day to ensure smooth distribution and crowd management.
According to Sikh history, Guru Arjan Dev Ji attained martyrdom after enduring severe torture under the orders of Mughal Emperor Jahangir. Despite immense suffering, Guru Ji remained calm and devoted to God, embodying the Sikh principles of faith, humility, and compassion.
As part of the observance, Sikhs across the world traditionally distribute sweet and cold drinks during the summer season to honor Guru Ji’s sacrifice. The act symbolizes responding to pain and cruelty with kindness, sweetness, and humanity.
Speaking during the seva, members of the Pune Sikh Sangat said the initiative was aimed not only at remembering Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s sacrifice but also at spreading the message of unity, equality, and universal brotherhood. People from all faiths and communities were welcomed warmly at the stall, reflecting the Sikh belief that humanity transcends all divisions.
The Chhabil Seva brought relief to thousands of citizens traveling through MG Road during the hot afternoon hours, while also offering a moment of reflection on the teachings of compassion and service.
The Pune Sikh Sangat expressed gratitude to all volunteers, supporters, and members of the local community whose contributions helped make the Shaheedi Diwas observance successful.
