Maharashtra RTO Strike From June 16: Driving Licence and Vehicle Registration Services Likely to Be Hit
Pune, 15th June 2026: Services at Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across Maharashtra are likely to come to a standstill from June 16 after employees announced an indefinite statewide strike over the government’s failure to address their long-pending demands.
The strike is expected to disrupt a range of public services, including vehicle registration, transfer of ownership, permit-related work, driving licence services, and the processing of other transport-related documents. The disruption is likely to inconvenience citizens, commercial vehicle operators, and transport businesses across the state.
The Motor Vehicle Department Employees’ Union has alleged that although a revised organisational structure for the department was approved more than three-and-a-half years ago, the government has yet to frame the service entry and promotion rules required for its implementation. As a result, employees have been unable to receive promotions and other career advancement benefits.
Union leaders claimed that issues that could be resolved at the administrative level are being unnecessarily delayed. They alleged that proposals are repeatedly being referred to the government for clarification instead of being decided upon promptly, prolonging uncertainty among employees.
The union held discussions with Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik around 10 days ago regarding the pending demands. However, employees expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the meeting, claiming that the administration did not even provide the official minutes of the discussions.
Following a union meeting on June 13, members unanimously decided to proceed with an indefinite strike. Union General Secretary Surendra Saratape said employees across the state are frustrated by the administration’s continued delay in addressing their grievances and have decided not to withdraw the agitation until concrete action is taken.
“The government must take an immediate and positive decision on the pending demands. Employees will not back down until their issues are resolved,” Saratape said.
Officials indicated that while the online learner’s licence process may continue, most office-based services are expected to be severely affected during the strike. With employees staying away from work, RTO offices across Maharashtra are likely to witness minimal activity, resulting in delays to several key transport-related services.
