Alternate-Day Water Supply Begins in Pune Today, Swimming Pools and Washing Centers to Remain Shut
Pune, 15th June 2026: Swimming pools and vehicle washing centres across Pune will remain shut from today (Monday) as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) begins implementing an alternate-day water supply schedule across most parts of the city to conserve reservoir stocks amid delayed monsoon rains and concerns over below-normal rainfall.
The civic body, which currently draws around 1,550 million litres per day (MLD) from the Khadakwasla dam system, expects to save nearly 400 MLD through the revised supply schedule.
PMC officials said the city may witness minor disruptions during the initial phase of implementation but expressed confidence that the system would stabilise within two to three days.
“During the 2024 water crisis, it took nearly a week for the network to stabilise after alternate-day supply was introduced. Based on that experience, we are better prepared this time,” said Nandkishor Jagtap, chief superintendent of the PMC water supply department.
According to officials, infrastructure upgrades carried out under the city’s 24×7 water supply project, including the installation of water meters, new transmission pipelines and sensors, are expected to help monitor the network more effectively and ensure smoother implementation.
As part of the water conservation measures, the PMC has prohibited the use of potable water for swimming pools, vehicle washing and construction activities. Builders have been directed to use treated water from sewage treatment plants, borewells and other alternative sources.
“Swimming pools and vehicle washing centres have been asked to remain closed during the water-cut period. Strict action will be taken against individuals or establishments found using PMC drinking water for these purposes,” Jagtap said.
The civic body has also formed enforcement teams to monitor compliance and launched a dedicated helpline for citizens facing water supply issues. The restrictions will remain in place until reservoir levels improve following substantial monsoon inflows.
