Mumbai-Pune Bullet Train to Cut Travel Time to 48 Minutes, Says Fadnavis
Pune, 17th June 2026: Maharashtra’s vision of creating a seamless economic corridor between Mumbai and Pune received a major boost on Tuesday, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announcing that the proposed Mumbai-Pune Bullet Train project is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to just 48 minutes.
The announcement was made during the inauguration of the advanced manufacturing expansion project of electronics manufacturing giant Jabil at the Ranjangaon Industrial Estate near Pune. Union Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with senior state government officials, industry leaders and public representatives, attended the event.
Addressing the gathering, Fadnavis said the state government aims to develop Mumbai and Pune as an integrated economic region supported by world-class transport infrastructure. He noted that faster connectivity between the two cities would significantly strengthen industrial growth, investment opportunities and economic activity across the region.
The Chief Minister also outlined Maharashtra’s broader logistics and infrastructure strategy aimed at positioning the state as a key player in global supply chains. He revealed that the state has proposed a dedicated freight rail corridor linking Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and the upcoming Vadhvan Port with the Samruddhi Mahamarg network. The corridor is proposed to pass through dry ports at Jalna and Wardha before extending to Gadchiroli.
According to Fadnavis, the project is expected to reduce transportation and logistics costs by nearly 7 to 8 per cent, enhancing the competitiveness of industries operating in Maharashtra. He added that the state government is working to create a robust industrial ecosystem supported by efficient connectivity and modern logistics infrastructure.
Highlighting Maharashtra’s growing prominence in the technology sector, the Chief Minister said the state is emerging as India’s leading data centre hub, with nearly 60 per cent of the country’s data centre capacity being developed in Maharashtra. The government is also focused on building a complete ecosystem for deep-tech industries, electronics manufacturing and semiconductor production.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw praised Jabil’s investment and expansion plans, describing them as a reflection of India’s growing strength in the global electronics manufacturing sector. He stated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India’s electronics manufacturing industry has expanded to nearly ₹13 lakh crore, making electronics the country’s third-largest export category.
Providing updates on major railway infrastructure projects, Vaishnaw said the proposed Mumbai-Pune Bullet Train would reduce travel time between the two cities to approximately 48 minutes. He also highlighted plans for a high-speed rail connection between Pune and Hyderabad, which could bring down travel time to around two hours and eight minutes.
Meanwhile, Jabil Managing Director B. N. Shukla said the company has significantly expanded its operations in India over the past year. The company’s manufacturing area has grown from 500,000 square feet to 1.2 million square feet, while its workforce has increased from around 5,000 employees to nearly 11,000.
Industry leaders and government officials at the event said such investments, coupled with large-scale infrastructure projects, are expected to further strengthen Maharashtra’s position as one of India’s leading destinations for manufacturing, technology and global investment.
