Pune Receives Season’s First Widespread Monsoon Spell, Bringing Relief and Traffic Disruptions
Pune, 2nd July 2026: After a relatively subdued start to the monsoon, Pune city and its suburbs experienced the season’s first widespread spell of sustained rainfall on Wednesday. While the showers brought much-needed relief from the heat and humidity, they also triggered waterlogging, traffic congestion and tree-fall incidents across several parts of the city.
Light rain began early in the morning before easing briefly. However, the intensity increased after 1 pm and continued for nearly four hours, making it the city’s heaviest and most prolonged spell of monsoon rain so far this season.
The persistent rainfall led to waterlogging on several key roads, including Fergusson College Road, Jangli Maharaj Road, Karve Road, Satara Road and in the Swargate area. Traffic slowed significantly as vehicles navigated flooded stretches, while pedestrians found it difficult to move through inundated roads.
Heavy showers were also reported from Kothrud, Sinhagad Road, Hadapsar, Wanowrie, Pashan, Aundh, Kalyani Nagar and Pimpri-Chinchwad, disrupting traffic and affecting the evening commute.
The downpour also led to tree-fall incidents at multiple locations. A large tree was uprooted near Akshardhara Book Gallery at Abhinav Chowk, narrowly missing a girl standing on the footpath. Another tree fell near Vartak Baug. No injuries were reported in either incident. Fire brigade personnel promptly removed the fallen trees and restored traffic movement.
The rainfall brought the city’s maximum temperature below 30°C, offering relief after several days of warm and humid weather.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shivajinagar recorded 11 mm of rainfall till Wednesday evening. Other recorded rainfall included Chinchwad (13 mm), Pashan (12 mm), Dapodi (10 mm), Talegaon (9 mm), NDA (8 mm), Rajgurunagar-Malin (6 mm), Hadapsar (5 mm) and Shirur-Daund (2 mm). In Pune district, Girivan received the highest rainfall at 35 mm, followed by Bhor with 21 mm.
The IMD has forecast continued rain activity across Pune city and district over the next two days, with intermittent moderate to heavy showers likely at several places. Authorities have advised commuters to exercise caution while travelling, especially on waterlogged roads and in areas prone to tree falls.
