Pune Metro’s Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar Line Goes Green: 7.67 MW Solar Project to Power One-Third of Operations
Hinjawadi, 5th July 2026: Pune Metro Line 3 will meet nearly one-third of its total energy requirements through renewable power generated by a 7.67 MWp rooftop solar network being developed across all 23 metro stations and the metro depot, making it one of the largest solar-powered urban transit initiatives in the region. The metro line is expected to open by mid July.
In a significant step towards sustainable urban transport, Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL) has installed rooftop solar plants at nine stations and the metro depot over the past three months. These stations form part of the first phase of the corridor that will be opened for commercial operations.
Once the entire solar network becomes operational, it is expected to generate approximately 14 million kWh (1.4 crore units) of clean electricity annually, significantly reducing dependence on conventional power sources and lowering the corridor’s overall carbon footprint.
The rooftop solar system has been designed to maximise the use of existing infrastructure by utilising station rooftops and depot buildings for renewable energy generation. By producing clean electricity at its own facilities, Pune Metro Line 3 will substantially reduce its reliance on grid power while lowering long-term operating costs.
The project is expected to meet nearly 33 per cent of the metro corridor’s total energy demand through solar power, marking a significant milestone in its sustainability strategy. The initiative aligns with India’s renewable energy goals and demonstrates how large-scale urban transport infrastructure can integrate clean energy solutions into daily operations.
The 23-kilometre fully elevated corridor connecting Hinjawadi IT Park and Shivajinagar has been designed with sustainability at its core. In addition to rooftop solar generation, the project incorporates advanced technologies such as 750 V DC third-rail electrification, Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling and energy-efficient rolling stock, reinforcing its position as a next-generation mass rapid transit system.
Pune Metro Line 3, also known as the Puneri Metro, has already completed end-to-end trial runs along the entire 23-km corridor, marking a major milestone ahead of the commencement of commercial services. The project has now entered its final stage of readiness and is awaiting statutory approvals and regulatory clearances.
The metro line will be commissioned in phases. In the first phase, the 13.3-km stretch between Maan and R. K. Laxman Museum, comprising 12 stations, will become operational. In the subsequent phase, the corridor will be extended to District Court station, enabling seamless integration with the Maha Metro network.
Once fully operational, Pune Metro Line 3 is expected to significantly improve urban mobility by reducing travel time between Hinjawadi and Shivajinagar to around 45 minutes from the current 90 minutes, cutting commuting time by more than 50 per cent.
