Central Railway Commissions First Standard KAVACH System in Solapur Division on 149-km Solapur–Wadi Route
Solapur, 10th July 2026: Central Railway’s Solapur Division has commissioned the Standard KAVACH System on the Solapur–Wadi section, covering a route length of 149.476 kilometres. The commissioning marks the first deployment of the Standard KAVACH System in the division and adds another section to the railway network equipped with the indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) technology.
KAVACH is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system introduced under the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The technology is designed to improve train safety by preventing head-on and rear-end collisions. It also enables automatic SOS alerts from locomotives in the event of unusual stoppages within block sections and provides a manual SOS facility that can be activated by the loco pilot when required.
According to Central Railway, the Standard KAVACH System is a non-signalling-based KAVACH system that operates through continuous communication between KAVACH-equipped locomotives and railway infrastructure. The system uses Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID)-based track identification technology to determine train position and support safe train operations.
As part of the commissioning, 1,234 RFID tags were installed and programmed across the Solapur–Wadi block sections in accordance with the approved system design.
Before commissioning, the system underwent validation and field trials as per the standards prescribed by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). The tests included evaluation of head-on collision prevention, rear-end collision prevention and SOS alert generation under different operating conditions.
The commissioning work was carried out by the Signal and Telecommunication Department, Project Unit, Solapur Division. The Solapur–Wadi section is now operational with the Standard KAVACH System following the successful completion of testing and validation.
