Punekar News Impact: PMC Begins Excavation to Trace Sewage Leak Near Star Villa Society in Ganeshwadi
Reported by Shoaib Tadvi
Deccan Gymkhana, 13 July 2026 : Following the publication of a report by Punekar News highlighting the persistent sewage overflow near Star Villa Society in Ganeshwadi, Deccan Gymkhana, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated action to address the issue.
On Monday, Ruturaj Dixit, Junior Engineer from the PMC Water Department, along with his team, visited the affected site and began excavation work to identify the source of the sewage leakage. The inspection marks the first official step towards resolving a problem that residents say has persisted despite repeated complaints.
The overflowing sewage had been causing foul odour, unhygienic conditions, mosquito breeding, and inconvenience to pedestrians, senior citizens, and children. Residents had earlier alleged that multiple complaints to the civic body had failed to elicit a response, prompting them to seek intervention from the PMC Commissioner.
Residents welcomed the civic body’s action but stressed that the work should lead to a permanent solution rather than a temporary fix.
“Following the publication of the issue by Punekar News and the persistent follow-up by local residents, the Pune Municipal Corporation has finally initiated action at the site. We appreciate the prompt response of the PMC team, who have started excavation work to trace the source of the sewage leakage. However, this is only the first step. We will continue to monitor the work closely until a permanent solution is implemented and residents are relieved of this long-standing public health concern,” said Nitin D’Souza, a resident of Ganeshwadi.
PMC officials informed residents that the ongoing excavation is aimed at locating the damaged section of the underground pipeline responsible for the sewage flow. Based on the findings, repair work is expected to follow.
The development comes after residents raised concerns over the deteriorating sanitary conditions in the area, which is home to several residential societies and educational institutions. Citizens have expressed hope that the civic body’s intervention will result in a lasting resolution to the issue.
Residents said they will continue to monitor the progress of the work and follow up with PMC until the sewage leakage is permanently rectified.
