Pune Airport May Become Part of India’s Hub-and-Spoke Aviation Network; Preliminary Assessment Conducted
Pune, 28th July 2026: The Pune Airport hosted a preliminary assessment for the introduction of the ‘Hub-and-Spoke’ operations model on 26th July 2026.
The Hub-and-Spoke model is an aviation network system where a central airport, known as the “hub”, connects passengers to multiple smaller airports, or “spokes”, through coordinated flight schedules. Instead of operating direct flights between every destination, airlines route passengers through the hub, allowing for improved connectivity, more efficient flight operations and better utilisation of airport infrastructure.
The introductory trial was attended by officials from the Ministry of Aviation, the Pune Airport Director, and representatives from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), CISF, Immigration, Customs, Scheduled airlines and several other essential departments from the airport.
The meeting featured an in-depth presentation shedding light on the core concepts of the Hub-and-Spoke model, its functional requirements, estimated benefits and the infrastructural and procedural enhancements required for its implementation.
The attendees then took into consideration the various operational, security, passenger facilitation and regulatory factors of the proposed airport model.
The discussion also included a comprehensive survey of the existing airport infrastructure to identify the necessary modifications to establish the newer model. The examination included inspection of passenger occupancy areas, terminal amenities, operational workflows and inter-agency coordination requirements.
Stakeholders who provided input were then assured that their feedback would be incorporated into future assessments and the structural implementation of the operational model.
According to Airport Authorities, the preliminary assessment marks an important step towards evaluating the feasibility of establishing the Pune Airport as a potential part of the Hub and Spoke model initiative of the Government of India.
